New Cambridge mayor to scrap £2bn metro scheme

Plans for a £2bn Cambridge Autonomous Metro are to be scrapped, the new mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has said.
Labour’s Nik Johnson confirmed that he would scrap the project after beating his rival, the Conservative incumbent James Palmer, to the post.
Speaking to the
Cambridge Independent after his win, Johnson confirmed that he would not be proceeding with the project, which could have seen a fleet of autonomous vehicles ferry residents around the counties
The Cambridgeshire Autonomous Metro (CAM) aims to deliver a new transport system to connect towns and villages across both Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. In March the project unveiled three sets of designs for the new transport system. One proposal would see a fleet of driverless pods ferrying people between 84 predetermined stops.
