Awareness about energy crisis KWEA worked with nonprofit research firm ThreeCubed to analyze data provided by KUB. The data begins when KUB ended its moratorium on disconnections during the pandemic. Tennessee lifted its disconnection moratorium in August and was one of 36 states to do so by October. The analysis showed that households in poor, non-white neighborhoods experienced a disconnection from power and water at a rate 170% higher than households in poor, white majority areas. "Essentially, we're putting a spotlight on the fact that we are in crisis," KWEA steering committee member and associate pastor Rev. Calvin Skinner told Knox News. "There is an energy insecurity issue that is greatly impacting Black Knoxville in particular. The power is with the people as we mobilize and educate the community on what the remedies are and that real sustainable solutions can be implemented."
