New legislation could ban public Wi-Fi if passed video blocks and last updated 2021-03-15 22:14:01-04 Thereâs a new bill roaming the halls of Congress in D.C. that says its purpose is âto prohibit a State or political subdivision thereof from providing or offering for sale to the public retail or wholesale broadband internet access service." Although this sounds like a ban on public Wi-Fi networks, the bill's sponsors say they want to improve public access to Wi-Fi. âAt the end of last year, we provided more than $10 billion to get broadband to unserved areas and Americans, more than $3 billion to help low-income Americans stay connected and funded our broadband mapping initiative. This committee must come together to oversee the implementation of these programs and make sure that money is going where itâs needed to help Ohioans,â said Rep. Bob Latta, R-Ohio.
