The Province provided an update this afternoon on the wildfire situation in British Columbia. Rob Schweitzer, Director of Fire Centre Operations for BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), provided statistics that show just how intense this fire season has been. Since the beginning of the wildfire season on April 1 there have been roughly 1,230 fires that have burned a staggering 425,000 hectares. There are currently 253 active fires in BC, and 38 of those are Wildfires of Note, meaning they are particularly visible or pose a potential threat to public safety. 174 fires were ignited by natural causes, while 15 are human caused.
