The blind business owners who operate the vending machines at the New York State Thruway's 27 rest areas fear they're being squeezed out of the soon-to-be-rebuilt facilities, which are set for major renovations beginning this summer. A number of blind businesspeople publicly rebuked the Thruway Authority last week, accusing the agency of violating state law and depriving the state’s blind community of business opportunities at the Thruway’s future rest areas. Last year, the state announced it would overhaul its 27 rest areas along the state’s 570-mile superhighway, a $450 million, privately funded project that’s slated to begin in the coming months.
