oceanside — A proposal to save money by closing a 60-year-old pool in a low-income neighborhood died on a 4-1 vote Wednesday after the Oceanside City Council faced widespread criticism and accusations of institutional racism for the idea. The council agreed, which Councilman Christopher Rodriquez opposed, to keep the Brooks Street Swim Center open and proceed with full funding and staffing for the new multi-facility aquatics center expected to open later this year at El Corazon Park. Rodriguez supported an alternate plan, proposed by the city staff at the council’s request, of closing Brooks Street for part of the year and using the savings to help fund the El Corazon Aquatics Center. His motion died without a second. Other options proposed included a full, permanent closure of Brooks Street.
