Oceanside councilwoman served with recall notice

Print
Opponents of Kori Jensen, who was appointed to the Oceanside City Council in January, served her Wednesday with a notice of their intent to circulate a recall petition.
“Jensen lied about living in Oceanside, District 1, an absolute legal requirement to qualify for office,” states the notice, signed by 25 district residents, and filed with the Oceanside City Clerk’s Office.
She has no experience to represent District 1 voters, the notice states, and “She never served on any commissions or committees, never attended any community meetings or civic activity.”
Cynthia Davenport, one of the signers, announced the notice during the public comments at the end of Wednesday’s City Council meeting. Davenport was among a limited number of residents allowed to attend the meeting in person for the first time since pandemic restrictions were implemented more than a year ago. ....

Oceanside council rebuffs call for 'emergency action' on homeless camps

OCEANSIDE
An Oceanside City Council member’s call for “emergency action” to remove the growing homeless camps from city sidewalks failed Wednesday, after elected officials reviewed efforts already underway and agreed to stay the course.
“A tent is not a home,” said Councilman Christopher Rodriguez, who asked for city staffers to return in 45 days with a plan to get unhoused people off the streets. “We must stop trying to make homelessness comfortable for people.”
A Feb. 28 article in The San Diego Union-Tribune, later published in the Los Angeles Times, about an encampment of new tents on a side street near Oceanside Boulevard brought increased attention to the city’s homeless situation. A longtime homeless man, Rodney McGough, organized an unusual effort to keep the tent site clean and to get help for the occupants. ....

Oceanside drops proposal to close Brooks Street pool

oceanside
A proposal to save money by closing a 60-year-old pool in a low-income neighborhood died on a 4-1 vote Wednesday after the Oceanside City Council faced widespread criticism and accusations of institutional racism for the idea.
The council agreed, which Councilman Christopher Rodriquez opposed, to keep the Brooks Street Swim Center open and proceed with full funding and staffing for the new multi-facility aquatics center expected to open later this year at El Corazon Park.
Rodriguez supported an alternate plan, proposed by the city staff at the council’s request, of closing Brooks Street for part of the year and using the savings to help fund the El Corazon Aquatics Center. His motion died without a second. Other options proposed included a full, permanent closure of Brooks Street. ....

Oceanside residents see racism in proposal to close Brooks Street pool

OCEANSIDE
Residents spoke out strongly this week against a suggestion that Oceanside close its aging Brooks Street pool and use the savings to operate its soon-to-open El Corazon Aquatics Center.
“It really was hurtful and . disrespectful . to suggest closing the pool,” said Wayne Godinet of the Oceanside Samoan Cultural Committee at Wednesday’s Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. A lifelong Oceanside resident, he swam at Brooks Street as a child.
For the record:
9:26 AM, Feb. 22, 2021An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the location of the El Corazon Aquatics Center. It is in City Council District 4.
City Councilman Christopher Rodriguez proposed earlier this month shutting down the Brooks Street Swim Center, which serves a low-income, ethnically diverse neighborhood, and using the money to operate the new El Corazon Aquatics Center, which is over three miles away in a more affluent area. ....

Oceanside council decides not to interview all 35 applicants vying for vacant seat

Print
Facing the possibility of a six-hour or longer meeting to interview a record number of applicants, the Oceanside City Council decided last week to change a policy it adopted a year ago to bring “transparency” to the political appointment process.
Thirty-six people initially applied to be appointed to the two years remaining in the District 1 council seat left vacant by the election of Mayor Esther Sanchez. One person has since withdrawn. The interviews and a possible selection are set for Jan. 27.
Instead of all 35 applicants, the council voted 3-1 last week to interview only the top five picks of each council member. Their choices will be announced to the city clerk at the Jan. 27 meeting, which would mean a maximum of 20 interviews and probably fewer if some choices overlap. Also, they will shorten each interview to five minutes instead of 10. ....
