Jeffrey Morefield, an Oklahoma National Guardsman and police officer in his local community of Edmond, returned from a deployment in the Middle East in August 2020. When he got back, Morefield was shocked by the effect of the pandemic on brick-and-mortar stores, so he decided to donate his entire stimulus check to a local café, according to the National Guard. “I didn’t feel like I deserved it,” Morefield said in a news release. “The stimulus in my mind was to try and help people who have not had a job, laid off or for businesses to try and help survive. For me, I’ve had a check the entire time. I felt a sense of guilt if I was to accept the stimulus check.”
