Opt-out numbers for 2021 state ELA exams Print Email More than half of students across 61 Long Island school districts in grades 3-8 eligible to take the state English Language Arts exams refused, according to a Newsday survey. Of the 83,247 eligible students in the districts that participated in the survey, 43,723 — 52.52% — refused to take the exams, which wrapped up at the end of April. This chart shows responses by 61 districts on the number of students eligible to take the tests, the number who took the tests, the number who did not take the tests and the percentage of those who did not take the assessments.
