Pellerin: Police shouldn't pick and choose which laws they enforce

That was scary. And the damage, I’m afraid, is permanent.
There is no question giving police the power randomly to stop and question people on the street, as Ontario did recently before sort of changing its mind, was a terrible idea. It didn’t take long for various police forces across the province (except, notably, the Ontario Provincial Police) to say they would not randomly stop people, not to worry.
Except I did. The law was stupid, to be clear. No doubt unconstitutional, too. But that’s not for cops to decide. That’s for duly elected governments or the courts. The job of police is to apply the law. Not decide whether or not they feel like enforcing it.
