The incident dates back to 2013, when Samantha Bloom (Naomi Watts), her husband Cameron Bloom (Andrew Lincoln), and their three sons are enjoying their vacation in Thailand. Sam falls off the roof and breaks her back, leaving her paraplegic and depressed. Cut to the present day-the Bloom family is back to their idyllic beachfront home in Australia. Every time Sam listens to the waves crashing, she’s reminded of her athletic days as a surfer. But the tragedy brings her back to her wheelchair-bound life and its limitations. One day, their eldest son Noah (Griffin Murray-Johnston) brings home an injured magpie chick and names it Penguin due to its black and white appearance. Although reluctant at first, Sam allows the boys to keep the magpie till it regains its strength. Irritated and disturbed by its presence first, Sam soon takes a liking towards it. Cameron tries to support his wife and tries very hard to keep up her spirits, even to the point that he mentions she should take up kayaking lessons. At first, she’s furious and rejects the idea but soon, a small, happy yet pivotal incident changes her mind. It is during the kayaking lessons that she finds her true self.
