Pete Docter Sets Animated Feature Category Record With ‘Soul’ Nomination Carolyn Giardina Soul Soul director Pete Docter earned his fourth nomination for best animated feature, a record for the category, which was first awarded in 2002. He won the category twice, for Up (2009) and Inside Out (2015), and was additionally nominated for 2001’s Monsters, Inc. in the category’s debut year. Docter has nine Oscar nominations in total, also having earned screenplay noms for Toy Story, Wall-E, Up and Inside Out. He was nominated in the animated short category for Mike’s New Car.
