The rate is currently set at $.20 per $100 of assessed value. Property values in the city and throughout Sevier County increased during the most recent round of appraisals. The certified rate should keep property owners paying about the same total to the city. State law requires that local governments complete regular reappraisals of property values, but provides protections to keep that from turning into an increase in the total taxes paid by property owners. The certified tax rate, or âtruth in taxationâ law calls for cities and counties to hold public hearings before they approve a tax rate that would generate more revenues after a reappraisal â the same process they would follow for raising the tax rate.
