Phosphorus Management Tool Advisory discuss future of Phosphorus Management Tool

MARYLAND – Today, Maryland officials and organizations representing farmers discussed the future of the Phosphorus Management Tool.
The PMT essentially regulates how much manure farmers can spread on their fields and where that manure will go if it can’t be used. Today, the Phosphorus Management Tool Advisory Committee discussed whether or not to ask for a one year pause in the schedule change for the PMT’s baseline level of phosphorus, committee members say. A member of the committee says he’s also hoping for a solution to handling excess manure.
During the meeting, the Phosphorus Management Tool Advisory Committee said the secretary of agriculture will ultimately have the final say on the future of the PMT.
