The new Britomart commissions include Shane Cotton’s five-storey high Maunga on the side of Excelsior House. These hidden waterways have many significant Māori sites that are peppered with the work of Māori artists. Just as the water flows below, so does the creativity above ground. In the sophisticated lanes off Queen Street, modern artworks vie for attention among the cafes and bars. And the Britomart precinct holds four brand-new art pieces, commissioned for the Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art exhibition. Along the hīkoi there are old favourites too, by rangatira artists like Fred Graham and Arnold Manaaki Wilson, the first Māori to attend the Elam School of Fine Arts.
