A letter sent to chief constables in England and Wales last week said they should increase visible patrols, amid concerns over the potential spread of Covid-19 at festive gatherings and New Year’s Eve parties. The home secretary acknowledged that the 43 forces are operationally independent, but called for a common approach to indoor events where the virus can spread easily. The letter, which was also signed by the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), thanked officers for their work throughout the year and outlined priorities over the coming weeks and months.
