Qualifying sets stage for Oct. 9 municipal races in Rapides Parish

The fields are set for the Oct. 9 election in which voters will decide on who fills two seats held by longtime Rapides Parish politicians.
One is the Rapides Parish Police Jury District I seat, which became vacant when Scott Perry died in January. His wife, Doris Perry, was appointed to fill the vacancy, but she did not qualify to run for the seat.
Democrats Jay Scott and June Johnson Davis will face off for the seat. Scott was Perry's opponent in the last race.
The second race is for the District 4 seat on the Alexandria City Council, which had been held by Harry Silver until his resignation in February. Silver, 99, was believed to have been the oldest elected official in the country.
