Here's what to know about the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, Day 5
Route: Waterloo to Anamosa via Center Point
Miles: 84.7 (110.8 for those taking the Karras Loop)
Elevation gain: 2,187 (3,894 for those taking the Karras Loop)
Highlights: For those who take the Karras Loop, this will be the ride's longest day. Anamosa awaits, with a pair of 25-foot-tall statues modeled on the characters in native son Grant Wood's "American Gothic" to greet riders. There's also the National Motorcycle Museum for fans of two-wheelers that don't require pedaling.
This is the most populous part of the route, with 11 pass-through towns — one, Shady Grove, a former ghost town with nearby new development. Watch along the way for the almost 2,000-foot-tall AFLAC tower in Rowley, one of the tallest guyed masts anywhere. And meeting town Center Point plans to celebrate all things porcine, with the town bedecked in pink. On the Karras Loop is the famous General Store Pub in Stone City, once an art colony co-founded by Grant Wood, who painted a landscape of the town.
