Rapides Parish public schools are closing early Wednesday because of the threat of bad weather. Superintendent Jeff Powell said schools that normally dismiss at 2:30 p.m. now will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. Later dismissals will happen as bus drivers arrive at schools. Parents can pick up their children early as needed, said Powell. Rapides Parish is at a moderate risk for severe weather on Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. National Weather Service in Lake Charles. Between 2 to 7 p.m., there's the possibility for strong tornadoes, wind gusts of more than 75 mph and large hail. A tornado watch has been issued until 6 p.m. for Avoyelles, Rapides and other Cenla parishes.
