Hailed as the God who is visible to the human eye, Surya Dev is said to have been born to Sage Kashyapa and his wife, Aditi on the Saptami Tithi (seventh day) of Magha, Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the Moon). Hence, the day is commonly referred to as Surya Jayanti and more popularly known as Ratha Saptami. Endowed with twelve wheels (that represent the 12 Zodiac signs) and driven by seven horses (that symbolise the seven colours in the rainbow), the Sun God's chariot has his half-brother, Aruna, as the charioteer. It is said that the Sun starts moving towards the north in the north-eastern direction on this day. Hence the name Ratha Saptami.
