Residents of Asian descent targeted in break-ins, said DA Ryan

What happened and when?
According to Chief John Carmichael, who has only been with the Newton Police Department for one month, during the last five break-ins there were forced entries through first floor windows and second floor balconies.
Jewelry, handbags, cash, and heirlooms were usually taken during the weekend incidents. Families were gone from their homes for a short period of time during the break-ins, said Carmichael.
Between Jan. 1 and July 15 this year, there were 46 break-ins in Newton, said Carmichael. The last five, which occurred between June 13 and July 10, happened to families of Asian descent. Of the other 41, there were two incidents where a thief or thieves broke into a home of a person of Asian descent, he said.
