Ross Edgley on why you need to try winter swimming


On 12 December, 2020, I walked into the sea at 8:16am as the sun began to rise on the Jurassic Coast of Devon, England. I then swam for seven hours and 11 minutes until the sun set and was fuelled by as many carbohydrates, calories and caffeine as the support boat could carry.

Essentially, it was like a drag race with the sun, where I was swimming with the strong spring tides whilst trying my best to avoid getting bruised and battered by the waves as my lips turned a funny shade of blue from the winter water (measuring 9°C). But after 53km (32.9 miles) I finished sore and salty, but successful and satisfied since as a team our research into winter swimming had worked and I hadn’t lost any of my fingers or toes to frostbite. But before I explain about the science of cold-water swimming, I wanted to expand on my personal reason to embark on this particular aquatic adventure, which dates back to GQ Heroes 2019…
