Look a little bit more a little less than 5 years ago i heard a presentation that was not that dissimilar from what you just outlined which was the dramatic way in which this Antiabortion Movement<\/a> had systematically worked to roll back rights across the country since the Tea Party Revolution<\/a> in particular in 2010 they talked about jobs and what they really did was went after Abortion Access<\/a> i couldnt believe what i heard and more importantly i didnt believe that i didnt know as someone who is pretty engaged and the next question i start to ask myself is why did i not know and are there more guys like me and then looked around and said theres just not that many of us here why not because this is an issue that affects all of us but most of us treated as if its just your issue with me shit thats very true and thats one of the questions i think thats very important you know theres a lot of good guys out there really do what you want to do their bodies up to her should be her choice how do you get men involved in this movement and why do you think the there are so many prochoice men who are. Silent for so long yes so if you look at the polling on this 6 in 10 men in america believe that abortion should be safe legal and easily accessible in most or all cases 60 percent that turns into Something Like<\/a> 61 ish 1000000 adult men in america what we believe in what weve set up the organization to solve for is that men dont engage for basically for specific reasons they dont actually know what harm is being created they understand abortion Anderson Roe V Wade<\/a> but they dont understand the harm thats being created by the rollbacks 1st and foremost number 2 they think this is a gendered issue number 3 they dont understand how to engage it what do i say how do i do whats the right role for me in the space because lets face it this isnt about me i shouldnt be centered we should be centered in this conversation and number 4 they dont see a place to naturally or comfortably and because guys tend to do stuff where other guys are and so weve tried to provide them a home thats ultimately just a funnel to the folks who are most directly impacted and the organizations that are leading the fight were a Partnership Organization<\/a> our strategy is simple get more folks like us to help the people who are really on the front lines and what you say is the value of male influence or syria gates and others 8 7 in defeating anti jewish legislation so as a starting point you know you talk about the religious sort of baseline of this i want to specifically name something which is this legislation is built these efforts are built on and about are all around controlling womens bodies right it is frankly sexist its massaging the stick its patriarchal whos in control of the system. Whos passing the laws whos on the courts its guys. I wish that more men just naturally listen to you philip right and in fact a friend of mine once said to me im mad that your organization exists because im mad it has to exist exist i tell my boyfriend to give money to planned parenthood he just not you say lets go do some fund raising for planned parenthood and comes along because now hes a part of Something Else<\/a> and that was really telling for me in multiple ways one to understand that yes we arent listening and really were not listening because if youre ignoring your girlfriend theres a real problem but 2 men have to do the work of talking to each other i cant fix the society in the structure but if you and i can have a conversation in which i can help you feel more comfortable i can bring you with me i can make sure that you know how to say how to talk about the issue and then we go get a voice we can go take on those other guys you know thats whats interesting too is that. You know i think a lot of the problems to stem from the fact that men arent allowed to kind of were not in a situation where we feel comfortable talking about this especially from a young age you know and so what what steps does your group and others take in kind of building that strong male prochoice advocate who knows not to take the you know take it away from him that people should be talking to some of the conversation but can be the right kind of allies for sure for sure so we just actually released as part of this campaign the 1st ever starter kit for prochoice male allies you can go online the men for choice dot org and you can literally download a tool kit that weve created in partnership with dozens of organizations across the country so that we could take their voices translated into the language and thoughts that we have as male at identifying allies and help people through that process theres a couple things that i think are the most critical one is im saying the harm as i mentioned to is shifting away from the notion that this is purely about abortion and purely womens issue yes this is about abortion. But but beyond that this is about freedom and its about control can a person be free who does not control their own body their own health care and their own reproductive decisions and the answer that question is unequivocal you know which also means that you and i have a freedom and they are right that to me sure you dont you need to have a lot of freedoms is the right but yes this is definitely one of your organization started 2015 years now with the georgia heartbeat legislation that was pre the human Life Protection<\/a> act that came out of alabama basically it being all forms of abortion in practice do you think things are getting worse for women and if so what are some of the what are some of the avenues that made her choices taking to actually try to squash some of this because were seeing it spread across the country. Do you think theyre getting worse remember based on the scope of the legislation why we have a major Supreme Court<\/a> case today right being heard on the at scotus that is essentially the same exact basic bill or the same exact piece of legislation that was ruled unconstitutional out of texas a few years back whats change to new dude on the Supreme Court<\/a> that so you know and so if that if if the louisiana bill gets. Is allowed to move forward its going to unload unleash another wave of abortion bans so the answer your question is yes it is getting much worse for access to abortion which also means its getting much worse for access to basic Reproductive Health<\/a> care where men for choice comes in as were not leading this movement we are partners and allies only and whatever you say ameesha is needed whatever the organizations in the local level tell us are necessary our job is just to get more men to show up and support that so as an example in georgia were going to launch have a launch event in georgia in a couple weeks here on march 14th all our strategy there is to mobilize people in georgia to support the Organization Organizations<\/a> in georgia or and i want to thank you so much for coming good stuff from a great Great Organization<\/a> keep up the great work.
