New new new new all around the globe jobs are being lost in record numbers thanks to the code 19 pandemic in fact the International Labor organization well they now estimate that working hours will decline by 6. 7 percent in the 2nd quarter of 2020 which is equivalent to 195000000 full time workers the aiello director general guy ryder sudden a statement to the media that quote this is the greatest test for International Cooperation in more than 75 years if one country fails then we all fail we Must Find Solutions that help all segments of our society particularly those that are most vulnerable or at least or least able to help themselves. And that that is the key my friends that is the standard that we must hold our leaders to in these dark times not only here in the United States but around the world as well the days of handing out pennies to the masses while the top 15 and 10 percent of the rest well its quickly coming to an end because history tells us that most often in the wake of the great pandemics the pitchforks and torches are sharpened and lit which is why its time to start watching the hall. On a city street you want to. See. This joyce state. Great city displays systemic deception is so much. So youll. Welcome over watching the hawks i am tyrol vinter and im on the chicago wow that is record numbers of unemployment i mean the mind boggling absolutely and as the nation reels and is going through its own mix of depression i think that there are a lot of questions on peoples minds not only in terms of when theyre going to get out of this quarantine stay at home order phase but also how were going to get our economy back on track you know thats the big question that everyone kind of talks about economy back bring economy back it its not as simple as just like oh we go back and stores reopen and things like that it lives much more complicated right absolutely part part of our issue is that some of these jobs a lot of the ones that were gone the fastest were talking about retail specifically and in a lot of our shopping malls in areas like that macys of the world those industries were already on their way out this coronavirus expedite the process but many of them had shuttered Stores Across the country and began doing that months ago you know its interesting to me says that the ilo what you mentioned earlier about the global issue of job loss there actually has to. With 38 percent of the Global Workforce roughly 1200000000 workers around the planet are working in sectors that are exactly what you just talked about these high risk sectors that are in severe decline and ill put these sectors include retail trade accommodation in Food Services and even manufacturing all those sectors that are hardest hit you look at this chart that you can see right now thats thats the chart of when the recession happened do 1000 made of. People asking for unemployment look at the spike at the end thats insane but when you look at it its completely baffling its upsetting its and raging in many cases its also something because we know what these projections are going to look like again outside of coronavirus times when were talking about manufacturing we knew that that industry was all but dead were talking about retail were talking about certain certain aspects of the Hospitality Industry a lot of the lower the lower skilled work a lot of a lot of jobs that Many Americans depend on who who dont have College Degrees and many depend on who live in across our urban centers i am a rule areas as well and i dont think that weve really taken it seriously to the extent that we should have what could happen to these jobs and how america will look if they no longer exist thats true and this is this is what youre seeing is the fall out of when you try to build an economy in a country on the Service Industry which is the only industry that really works when you have the wealth divide that with this country has you know when you have so much debt between the haves and the have nots the Service Industry is what fills that because the industrialists like you said theres no Industrial Base anymore the other problem that we were talking earlier today when we look at the story too is these numbers that were seeing 17000000 filing for unemployment you accurately pointed out to me earlier today that like thats what we know of in terms of who doesnt have a job exactly we have to really break down these numbers and understand that this is not a true reflection of how many people are unemployed across this country we know that states across the country michigan being one thats prominent right now but states across the country are are having issues with. There Systems People who are trying to apply for unemployment online think we can not because there are so many people applying at once these systems were not built for hundreds of thousands of people almost entire states in some cases applying for Unemployment Benefits at one time so theyre shutting down and many people are you know flooding the phone lines trying to get someone to answer them so that they were actually be counted and receive Unemployment Benefits so that 17000000 of the people who basically got through exactly. That that tragedy i mean thats that breaks my heart when you look at that and the other problem too is that because of what youre talking about part of the big 2. 2 trillion care package that you know that they just passed in congress laid off workers are eligible for enhanced unemployment they might get an extra 600. 00 a week for the 1st 4 months this is going on but if they cant get through if they can actually get the systems of government to work and get through those phone lines or get online without the site crashing theyre never going to see that absolutely this is eerily reminding me of what happened with the initial obamacare rollout everybody signed up and then all of a sudden nobody could get anything done because that site was not ready for the capacity either knowing that because on a virus its going to have the effects that it does on the economy i dont understand why the states didnt do more in the weeks leading up to it to actually make sure that people will be able to you last that service it goes back to what i said to but its true right after all these pandemics when you look throughout World History thats when the pitchforks come out thats when the torches come out and thats when suddenly you see a dramatic shift in how society runs itself immediately following sometimes to the fascist sometimes to the socialist but either way i think were in the were going to big changes coming as soon as were out of this absolutely. Coronavirus has effectively canceled 2020 weddings baby showers vacations conferences festivals and sports have all busy fallen victim to the emotional toll the loss of these events has cant be underscored and neither can the fine. In the sports world weve seen basketball baseball soccer golf and even horse racing affected with millions even billions on the line cope with 19 is costing big books but one sporting event seems to be weathering the storm a bit differently than the wrist wooden organizers canceled their tournaments due to the coronavirus pandemic but new details show how a clause in the tennis elite insurance policy will offset revenue loss of nearly 250000000. 00 here to tell us more are t. American sports producer regina hamm boy regina wimbledon smart think im. Going to forget all the newly planning ahead yes so they bought essentially pandemic insurance now that doesnt sound like something the normally is done yet here you have wimbledon one of the biggest tennis tournaments in the world was smart enough to say and then a while back to it wasnt like just recently by within 5 years of what prompted this so its really interesting well take it back about 18 years to 2002 when we had the sars outbreak that was in wimbledon and the british open with a Golf Tournament decided you know what lets start 2nd some money away in case there is a pandemic like this again there was no you know for say the never crystal ball or anything they just happen to these make a Smart Business decision and theyre going to recoup a lot of money theyre going to coop about 141000000. 00 u. S. Dollars from that insurance policy to be paid out and the british open will do roughly about the same maybe the announcement after wimbledon because if they didnt by a certain date they would get that payout and thats why a lot of events here in the u. S. Like the p. G. A. Tour have been postponed not canceled oh interesting so they postponed of so the way potentially that when you get that youll get your payout interesting e. J. May not have a pandemic clause but the british open you know and well but then they do have that in case of severe like a pandemic the loss of a monarch i believe is also included we obviously dont need that though you know it its very interesting that things like that play into large sporting events like there are a lot of for. Were thinking only of course you know actually switching gears to you have seen the president dana white is on the hot seat this week for insisting hes going to push ahead and the supposed to do is on tribal lands in california not the private island is this a clear indication hes trying to stir 1000 guidelines and what is the danger to competitors you know he definitely is trying to skirt it he has been a big proponent of donald trump considers him a close friend and on march 12th he had a call with a present from the Vice President there saying you know be smart be cautious but live your life and just be safe which in the middle of a crisis the you know theres no white house record of the press pool didnt put anything out. But it happened in the paper for that happened again but this was a larger groups of all the heads of major sporting leagues they made States Dana White is insisting is going to go ahead and i guess his that process is hey if people need sports to keep going it distract them from Everything Else but the same time you have competitors on the computer just. Who is filling in for made up who cant make it from russia who will be fighting tony virgos then. Excuse me hes saying he put a tweet out saying you know what im scared them to do it anyway because for them the person who might be enough then and also to dana white insisting theyre going to morgan this is not just 249 in california on this tribal casino that are do you suppose a weeks ago closed so theres a whole nother matter there the Sporting Organization oversees events california is like were not backing this so its kind of i guess the do it in your own wrists and he doesnt care he wants it to go on whether its because of the conversation have or not it was. Because they got to get it you know you want to get people entertainment ones at home so hey if you can put out some entertainment but to me the risk of you know i dont know if well have an audience there or not i know the. Wrestling and similar things like that there are still Going Forward without an audience which is bizarre weird. With the heads as you mention of many large sports organizations last week could this movie just by you have see 2 for you know dana white and pushing you have said to her you know do you think that this spring forth from the discussion you dont know for sure but i mean is that is it just kind of you know if its just too convenient its you know you put 2 and 2 together youre likely going to get 4 youre not going to get 5 so the turn of events how it happened yet back in march he did have a u. S. C. If i know 170 in brazil there are no fans there just like wrestle mania but hes still at the race but the 3 events after that were canceled interesting enough but now theres been this other phone call with the n. H. L. The m l b the n. B. A. All the try to believe look were going to try to get you guys back in a video i took that as the green light and say hey you know what were going to do it. And he insists that yes he doesnt have the private island but after the event if they do hold in california on these tribal lands which is a whole nother discussion we can get into for 30 minutes. Where where how are you going to keep these athletes think theyre letter your plan in place and he doesnt really seem to have an answer yet its hard to practice 6 feet distance with combat support thats not how that is so good idea to other i mean thats not going to make for a very good fight but i think watching rock and soccer robots and you have an office and you know and but then again look at the other 2 competitors and they say look were going to wave our fear of this and were going to go forward then thats their right to go fight i guess you could say i dont know its very weird situations regina thank you as always for bringing us up and covering sports for us here and watch it all its always a pleasure thank you. I dont trust medical at all ever and the reason for that is i had this horrible autoimmune disorder growing up and it turns out it was completely alleviated with very drastic dietary measures. And i went to a number of doctors to discuss what happened to me and i was basically laughed at like diet has nothing to do with autoimmune disorders so my suggestion to people who have Health Issues they cant figure out if theyre going to see a medical professional and theyve been going for 10 years and theyre still in the same place they should probably take it upon themselves to Start Testing things out testing out diet testing out exercise and try and figure out things on their own. Jointly everything a little excitement and ill be speaking to get a little bit. Or. Im sure. Said you know i cant take it. How. Missing mom of the sweet gone to me im a Strong Enough sharing dont you think some emotions. Thats. Very uncertain. Are. Welcome the baby had a fever of 38. 30 were hoping thats. All ok. So. Shelter in place orders are touted as lifesaving precautions so simple enough to stay home save lives its a catchy phrase with me. And promote. Well ed used to help flatten the curb Coronavirus Spread but what about americas half a 1000000 people who are homeless 65 percent of them have spent time in and out of shelters and the other 35 percent are found in our streets under bridges sidewalks parks and abandoned buildings coated 19 poses a unique set of challenges for this Underserved CommunityHomeless Individuals often grave Health Care Outcomes they Lack Health Insurance cant see doctors regularly or at all suffer from Mental Health and addiction issues that disproportionate rates and have nowhere to turn for help as a Global Pandemic continues to spread cities are scrambling to respond to the growing homeless crisis and its intersection with Public Health according to the u. S. Department of housing and urban development over half of americas Homeless Population is found in one of 5 states california new york florida texas and washington permanent Supportive Housing transitional housing and shelters was born with a population are in short supply and cant meet the growing demand as the local governments response appeared with work over 1000 and its effect on the homeless theyre failing thousands of People Living overcrowded shelters and on the streets with little access to basic things like showers and sedate at least 3 shelter residents have tested positive for coping 19 in l. A. With thousands of empty hotel rooms available bickering and territorialism among local leadership continues to put Homeless People at risk. Contrast this with boston where Convention Centers are being repurposed repealed hospitals but also providing shelter for those in dire need as a Global Pandemic continues to spread these are through a way to respond to the growing homeless crisis and its intersection and Public Health joining us now is to have a bath street medicine director of Health Students taking action together. So i beg your very much for coming on to a pleasure having you on the show again this spread in bamako is devastating in its death toll continue to mount specifically among the black American Population demographic also disproportionately affected by homelessness they cant social distance they cant practice Safety Measures like the c. D. C. Recommends and also have many preexisting conditions this is a rep recipe for disaster is it not as a Street Health dr do you see your royal provider and are there others taking this form of activism to the streets to try to help this population that truly is right in the crosshairs of this pandemic. Well thank you for having me 1st. If im a medical student so not yet a doctor but i do spend quite a not quite a bit of time on the streets and so. To see answer your question some of the stuff that weve been seeing out there when we 1st started going not a lot of people knew about the virus and as we continued to go folks found out about it because some of their basic essential Services LikeStreet Outreach Team stopped going they those who relied on and handling were no longer receiving their regular income and so. Just to kind of build off of that weve also found that the conditions that homeless folks are in is especially those who are in shelters. Are inadequate to address the recommendations by the c. D. C. Youd be surprised actually the recommendation for those who are unsheltered who are experiencing symptoms that dont lead to respiratory compromise meaning not severe disease but still symptoms not. The last could possibly be to shelter in place in their encampment and so it would make it very important for us people who are still continuing to go out to be able to provide those services to them on the street. And the federal Emergency Management agency or fema is helping in l. A. By paying for 75 percent of everything costs for support of housing by the state of california is providing 800000000 in emergency funding to counties they think this type of partnership is something we will see across more states. What hopefully there the amount of task force in funding allocated to addressing covert 19 in Homeless Populations is absolutely necessary i think we should start to see that rise more and more however one of the things that we want to warn about is kind of stigmatizing unsheltered populations as vectors of the disease when in reality theyre not no more likely maybe even in some some circumstances less likely to get it then you or i and so it would be important not to just instinctually round up homeless folks in the process violating their Civil Liberties because theyre being seen as a vector of disease in terms of funding and allocating resources to them i think its important that whatever measures those are led by people whove been doing the work and not just an instinctual and instinctual call for emergency housing no matter what that might look like we think its important that emergency housing for those who require it in those who need it include lots of social and medical support services you see if you work hard to get that housing for someone but you dont follow up with the kind of support folks would need its very easy for them to lose that house and out back on the street. Thats a great point you made on both fronts there also you know we shouldnt be vilifying them or putting them out there are saying like all of these people are going to be more susceptible and dangerous. And in getting this disease than anything else i think its great points that you just made there the ending homelessness act of 2019 was sponsored by Maxine Waters last year and she wrote a strongly worded letter to hud secretary ben carson about hog regulations that increased homelessness and thus far its become kind of this political football tossed bath back and forth between both parties what are measures congress and the white house on a federal level what are the measures that they can take to improve the dire homeless situation that were facing here in the United States. Well i think it would be our 1st start to develop task force which put experts in the position to inform those responses from Public Health officials that cetera i think something that those who may not understand the live realities of the whole those folks and i actually got this analogy from a mentor of mine is that homelessness for those experiencing it is kind of like being on a ship direct boat and so you kind of holding on to whatever pieces you can to form some semblance of structure so any kind of response which works to radically disrupt that rounding people up streets sweeps forcing people into emergency housing to try to stop the spread of the virus all of those are measures which at the surface seem like good ideas but in reality could actually be making the spread of the virus worse. In terms of our larger response at least locally one of the problems is that in shelter populations those charters arent adequate in terms of spacing to accommodate the amount of people that they need at the distance that they need them at along with the hygiene protocols that are required and then thats just the shelter population for us shelter populations people who are homeless but are sleeping on the streets access to stuff like hand washing bathrooms all of those are not available and so it makes following the guidelines of the c. D. C. Nearly impossible and in my experience Something Like a mobile hand washing stations which is something that Community Organizers and advocates like students and Public Health workers have been putting together should be instituted on should be instituted on a federal level rather than just on a volunteer basis. For the brilliant brilliant breakdown of what whats going on and im bank you again for coming out and really im really breaking researcher down for us its always a pleasure having you on and keep up the great work out there in terms of helping those. People that need me to help the most. Thank you so much for having. The rules of life dictate that all great things must one day come to an end and that my friends is where the seti at Home Computer Network found itself on march 31st the end based on a u. C. Berkeley since 1999 the search for extraterrestrial intelligence at Home Projects search for potential at radio city intelligence evidence throughout Data Collected by the era cboe observatory in puerto rico and the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia it did this not by using a massive government or privately funded supercomputer but by utilizing in bast volunteer based user donated network of personal Home Computers laptops and even android mobile devices to create this kind of virtual supercomputer out of the many but they are not my friends because the closing of seti at home isnt because the search for extraterrestrial life is ending.
