An aircraft took off by itself and crashed in farm field near Central City, Nebraska Share Updated: 10:59 AM CDT May 5, 2021 It's the plane that got away.The Merrick County, Nebraska Sheriff's office says an unmanned aircraft crashed Tuesday evening shortly after taking off by itself from the Central City airport.Investigators say the small plane was undergoing maintenance at the airport when "at some point the airplane began to travel down the runway," according to a Facebook post by the sheriff's department.The plane reach an estimated elevation of 200 feet, and traveled 1.5 miles before crashing into a nearby cornfield. No one was onboard the aircraft, and no one on the ground was hurt. The crash took place around 7:30 p.m.Representatives of the FAA and NTSB cleared the scene. No further word was immediately available on how the plane got away.
