Previously charged with second-degree murder, Kahpeaysewat pleaded guilty to manslaughter last month at Court of Queen's Bench in Saskatoon, arguing she was intoxicated and didn't remember what had happened the day Sutherland died. She had no prior criminal record. Following victim impact statements from Sutherland's family and a joint submission from the Crown and defence, Justice Gerald Allbright handed Kahpeaysewat a six-year sentence — which, after remand credit, leaves her roughly two-and-a-half years left to serve.
