Save Macadamias from Extinction - ForceChange

Goal: Provide greater protections for threatened macadamia trees and habitats.
One of the world’s most popular nuts is in danger of going extinct if immediate action is not taken. Wild macadamia trees in Australia have experienced anywhere from 60 to 80 percent loss in their numbers. As a result, several versions have landed on endangered species lists.
A potent combination of habitat reduction and generations of cultivation is largely responsible for this downward trend. The rainforests where macadamia trees grow have been destroyed to make room for industrial development. The many cultivated orchards that contain trees have done little to alleviate the problem. In fact, these orchards may be fueling the lack of genetic diversity crucial for the long-term survival of the species.
