Previous Next Thursday, February 04, 2021 1:00 am Editorial Unanimous support reflects reform bill's value Unanimous votes in the Indiana General Assembly generally occur with the most innocuous of measures: resolutions honoring retiring members or championship sports teams. The 96-0 vote on House Bill 1006 doesn't fall into that category. It's an important piece of legislation, deserving of lawmakers' full support as it moves to the Senate for consideration. The bill, authored by Rep. Greg Steuerwald, R-Danville, tackles the sensitive topic of police reform. It comes in the wake of George Floyd's death at the hands of Minneapolis police officers and protests in cities across the nation, including Fort Wayne, in 2020. No one wants to take away the ability of law enforcement officers to safely serve and protect their communities; no one wants to see another death resulting from police actions.
