Youre watching quick bites, the show that is San Francisco. And today youre in for a real treat. Oh, my food inspired by the mediterranean and middle east with a twist so unique you can only find it in one place in San Francisco. Were at the 55th annual armenian festival and bizarre. This is extra special not only because i happen to be armenian, but there is so much Delicious Food here. And i cant wait to share it with all of you. Lets go. Armenia, culture and cusine has had much cultural exchanges with its neighbors. Today armenian food infuses he flavor from the mediterranean, middle east, and eastern europe. This is our 55th year and in San Francisco were the largest armenian Food Festival and widely recognized as one of the best Food Festivals in the area. We have vendors that come up from fresno, from los angeles showing off their craft. We really feel like we have something for everyone in the neighborhood and thats really what it is, is drawing people to see a little bit of our culture and experience what we experience weekend in and weekend out. We are behind the scenes now watching the chef at work preparing some delicious armenian kabob. This is a staple in armenian cooking, is that right . Absolutely, since the beginning of time. Our soldiers used to skewer it on the swords. We have a combination of beef and lam and parsley. And every september over 2000 pounds of meat being cooked in three days. After all that savory protein, i was ready to check out the fresh veggie options. This is armenian cheat sheet. Its tomatos and mint and olive oil. That makes summer food. And what im doing is im putting some nutmeg. It is kind of like cream cheese. In armenia when they offer you food, you have to eat it. They would welcome you and food is very important for them. In every Armenian Community we feel like were a smallvilleage and they come together to put on Something Like this. What i find really interesting about San Francisco is the blends of armenia that come together. Once they are here, the way people Work Together at any age, including our grandmothers, our grandfathers, skewering the meat, its fun to see. Fun to see everybody get together. We call it subarek. Its a cheese turn over if you want. We make the dough from scratch. We boil it like you do for la san i cant. The amount of love and karin fused in these foods is tremendous. They come in every day to prepare, cook and bake bread, all in preparation for this big festival. Nobody says no. When you come them, they have to come tomorrow for the feast. What a treat it is to taste a delicious recipe, all made from scratch and passed down through generations. It really makes you appreciate the little things. Its one of the best festivals. Its outstanding, a marvelous occasion. Were outside checking some of the food to go options. I grabbed myself a ka bob sandwich, all kinds of herbs and spices. Im going to taste this. Looking fantastic. One of the best ive had in a long time. You know its delicious b i have just enough room for dessert, my favorite part. Were behind the scenes right now watching how all the pastries get made. And weve got a whole array of pastries here. Honey and nuts and cinnamon, all kinds of great ingredients. This is amazing. Heres another yummy pastry made with filo dough. Oh, my god. Really sweet and similar, its lighter. This is what i like. We have a lovely row here. Looks like a very delicious and exciting surprise. Im going to bite into it. Here we go. Um. This is great with armenian coffee. Now were making some incredible armenian coffee. We buy our coffee, they have the best coffee. They come from armenia, specially made. And would you like to try it . I would like to try. Would you like sugar or no sugar . No sugar today. Im so excited. Really earthy. You can really taste the grain. I think thats what makes it so special. Really comes out. I hope you try it. Were having a great time at the armenian festival. We ate, we saw, and we definitely conquered. I dont know about you, but i have to go down to the food. Check out our blog for so much more at sf bites at tums abler. Com. Until next time, may the force be with you. First of all, everybody is welcome and we ask two things when they get here. One, that they try something theyve never tried before. Be it food or be it dancing or doing something. And if they feel like it was worth their while to tell one person and bring that person, that family member, that friend down the street to come with them. Were going to have to do a lot of eating so get ready. Get ready. And you diet tomorrow. Ill high are ups we like to pledge 50 jobs so for youth this summer. Excellent. Thank you. A large part of the jobs it did manual Resource Center started off a a Youth Program and our first year 35 percent of the Young People Working fulltime we know there the pressors looking for committed young people the resource fair attracts over 6 hundred people if all over the city and the greater bay area. We have public and private partnership the employers came from hertz rent a car and many private sector jobs sea have the city staff so the airport is here, starbucks is here weve been retail we have restaurants, we have offices and so the young people will get an opportunity to partner search warrant with so many of the great champions for jobs. For the past 5 years weve hired over 3 willed youth to work as business traces they have been promoted to supervisors. If youre doing a job at starbucks the opportunity for them allows them to understand math if tire working at anothers Architectural Firm understanding debris or a media to understand reading and writing differently those are opportunities that the mayor is clear he wanted to provide were going to be do mock interviews helping young people that the resumes a it pulls them to the Career Opportunities and Building Inspection Commission make sure theyre prepared for those opportunity educational and in terms of their preparation skills by the time many of them leave theyll leave with jobs and new relationships building their network of the opportunity to thrive and i think i could focus and i check around the booths to see had is available im hoping to get a job but have employers you know employers give practice. I feel this will be a great way to look for jobs we can do this like you get paid. When our young people walk we capture their information so we can do follows up and we have a room that has a our computer lab an opportunity for them to do cover letters and talk about updating their profile and i think how you do things on the internet we help quam and they can update tare resume and can look in interviews and on the spot job officers we hire about one hundred young people today lee alone it is exciting out of that it is if they come through with one hundred walk out with a job. Well rock and roll i guess in the job interviews it went great. As a youth we get to go through experiences 3 builds a Great Foundation gymnasium a positive outlook and more importantly confidence. We really want to do at the end of the day exist a young person with the possibility of what we can be and do we have them go home i want to get there let me connection with those folks and ultimately got on the path. Good morning good morning caitlin im Caitlin Lopez 23 years old i moved out to california and San Francisco, california had i was about 8 years old and actually put in foster care at the age of 9 or 10 had a baby at the 16 years old so ive kind of had this crazy like youth experience. Despite the challenges she faced caitlin finished high school and take advantage of program. I heard will mayor ed lees program through my social worker and i interviewed with entrepreneurs after i was matched walking sweet spots office i thought imitated not been in that type of office ones i got into the office with my supervisor we boptd and i got a call from h. R. I got the position and im in. I have. We hired merry for 8 weeks and saw how she did she was only going to work 8 weeks but at the end question offered her a position part time. I have those traits it has been great working here my term of 5 weeks was pretty much like family supporting each other i feel like the mayors job program helped me to get in job without the Jobs Plus Program i i probably would have not even had a job. In her case shes a mother of two now going to school fulltime and making it happen so if she can do it differently anyone that has a willingness to try at least try to make it can do it. Those programs are amazing theyre so important for young adults to really go out there and make a Better Future for themselves and despite not having a traditional you can go out there based on the programs thats what theyre for they want to help you succeed.
