SFGTV Government Access Programming July 13, 2024

Actually implement that in a way that integrating your business into the community. But overall, i would say i think the move to open up the space to the public to create a restaurant in this space that can truly be serving of all different interests and members of the community is actually a step in the right direction. And so i would move to not take dr and approve the project. Thank you. So i will also be not supportive of this dr. Let me just add to your wise words, commissioner johnson. You are always so on point. That i think, you know, we have seen all kinds of changes in our neighborhoods. Resulting from income disparity. And, you know, its hard to see sort of the effects in terms of displacement, loss of cultural space and accessibility. I dont believe this project does any of these things. I also think that theres been a real shift in the last ten years in terms of whats viable for restaurants and retail. I think theres been a sort of seismic shift. I wish we lived in a world where having pinball machines and an arcade was economically viable. But we dont live in that world. And so i am somebody who has spent a large part of my career doing Technical Assistance for businesses in the mission, doing, you know, Building Support for folks to make a living, mostly immigrant businesses. And i know how tough it is to be able to survive, to be able to pay your employees, to be able to pay your mortgage. And so i think coming up with innovative Business Plans that involve different things, you know, events, pinball machines, hours during which kids can come, hours during which techies can come, things that can be flexible uses that will allow you to have a business thats viable and at the same time as commissioner johnson suggested, i hope you i saw you writing down her suggestions, which was excellent, which contribute to the community and are respectful of the community life. I think thats the way to go. So i think that i commend you for having so much support. I think thats great. And i also want us to think about that issue of flexibility and spaces. I think umu designation is the perfect designation to be trying out flexible Business Models, having something going on during the day, having Something Else going on in the evening, maybe something on weekends, something on weekdays. I think because its meant to be that in between pdr and residential, it is the perfect way to be trying out new Business Models in this world that we are living in of amazon and grub hub delivery where its so difficult to have restaurants survive, even with alcohol. And so i think just for planning staff, i want to see some of these things and explore some of these things, especially in umu, because i think its important to preserve jobs. And i also will say that the pdr designation is exactly what we thought of, the repairing of the machine, thats the exactly what pdr is and if having this extra income with this new Business Model allows you to employ all of these folks, fixing up ski ball machines and other places, i think thats exactly what we want. So thank you so much. And i will not be supporting this dr. Commissioner richards. Just a couple thoughts before we vote and hopefully go home. I would love to see we talked about equity before. I would love to see on this project or dr, the applicant and the project sponsor and staff, if we so desire, actually put the project through the equity lens and see what the sausage is at the end when it comes out. So that would be an interesting one. I love going to detour in my neighborhood. They have childrens afternoons 12 to 5, saturdays and sundays. I hope you are able to do Something Like that for kids. The only thing that troubles me, and the reason why i will vote yes is indeed you had an events there afterwards. It looks like you did. If you didnt, then now is the change to say. With social media its hard to disprove these kinds of things. I love pinball. Second. Thank you, commissioners. Seeing nothing further, theres a motion that has been seconded to not take dr and approve the project as proposed. On that motion. [roll call vote] i vote not to take dr. The motion is to not take dr. [roll call vote] so moved, that motion passes 41 with commissioner richards voting against. [applause] its a weird spot. I struggle with [end of meeting] shop and dine in the 49 promotes local businesses, and challenges residents to do their shopping within the 49 square miles of San Francisco. By supporting local services in our neighborhood, we help San Francisco remain unique, successful, and vibrant. So where will you shop and dine in the 49 . I am the owner of this restaurant. We have been here in north beach over 100 years. We have four legacy Business Applications before you today and im going to give a brief summary of each with the features that were recommending to be safeguarded and we have several of the Business Owners here today to speak during Public Comment. The first is Community Music center board of trustees, the Community Music center was founded in september 19 and incorporated in 1939. The mission of the organization is to make highquality music accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities regardless of financial means. 2012, the organization purchased the victoria an house located next door to their Current Location at 552 cap street. The intent is to house additional large classroom teaching spaces and another recital hall per for formances and needed staff space. The realization of this expansion is planned for the 100th anniversary and 2021 and will greatly many prove their services and ability to sustain their tuitionfree programs. I wanted to note that the cap 3 property was surveyed by the Planning Department in 2010 and found to be eligible for listing for its architecture and cultural associations. Staff is recommending both locations be recognized 544 cap street and 74,130th avenue. Were recommending the following features. The mission to make music accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities regardless of financial means. Their commitment to diversity, their responsiveness to the community that they serve and the 544 cap street Garden Court Yard and house. It takes us to our next applicant. Located at 401 sixth street. There was a mistake in the staff report and the calender language regarding the description of the location. Its not located on the eastside of grant avenue. Sorry for the typo. It is located at sixth and harrison in soma. The end of oak bend in 1973 as an after hours lgbtq country western nightclub at its current site. The club celebrates diversity and inclusion with support for the lgbtq community. Al, the original owner died in 1989 leaving the club to his brother. The two brothers owned and operated the club, it was popular for their contests, their contest gained wider notice when it was featured in the weekly serialized newspaper column tales by the city and later in the book by the same name. Staff wanted to note that the property is a contribute oor soh of market lgbtq Historic District which is significant under criterion 1 and 2. And were recommending the following features. Their location at sixth street. The waterfall in their back patio and the interior murals and the space divided into three music rooms and the statue on the roof of home of shabushabu located at 1800 sutter street. Its a familyowned japaneseamerican restaurant on the first floor of the kemton Buchanan Hotel and japan town. The restaurant was founded in 199 as part of a project to bring Japanese Culture to San Francisco by a company of osaka japan. Its owned b owned by a former. Over the 40 years its been in business, moms has been remained bridging japanese and American Culture through dining space and cuisine becoming a Gathering Place for the japan town community. I wanted to note that the restaurant was included on a list of japan town Cultural Resources and the japan town cultural her age and Economic Sustainability strategy which is the first document in San Francisco to focus specifically on how to preserve and promote a neighborhood Cultural Heritage. We are recommending that the location be recognized along with the following features. The name mums and the logo which reflects a symbol of Japanese Culture. Including shabu and the two circular windows, which have been in existence since the opening of the restaurant and the interior mural and if you have any questions im available. We have two speaker cards. Woody and sarah. Good afternoon, my name is woody and im the Vice President of advocacy and programs at San Francisco heritage. And today i would like to express heritages great support for the Community Music centers, nomination to the legacy business registry, heritage, and encourage them and try to help get this happening for them. I also really want to quickly state that both locations are very significant sites, especially the one on cap street. Its probably lesser known and a significant site to that neighborhood. So heritage wholeheartedly endorses this nomination and the next one. They end up which is not on grant street. We very much support it as well. Thank you. Sarah fam. Hi, my name is sarah tam and im the youngest daughter. And im here to represent my dads story is a he came as an immigrant and he first started walking as a temporary dishwasher in 1981. And five years he was able to work his way up as an assistant manager. My dad and a previous owner of mums went on trips to japan multiple times and they wanted to bring japanese comfort food to San Francisco. They wanted to create an identity for japan town through cuisine. Some of these dishes we still have today including shabushau many of he told his business to my dad in 2000 and has been familyrun since. And in 2007, we were very lucky to be included in japan town Cultural Heritage and and i think that strongly influenced our ability to renew the lease with kdg and with gdb they want to incorporate us and the japan town community. We have a japanese pop theme, a mural by japanese pop artist from japan. We have picture of the staff on the wall and one of the prerequisites we needed to change our name to change and at least we weratleast we were able mums aspect. The lease suppose and we almost lost the lease. They wanted us to change our name, change our logo and remove the pictures and they also wanted to change the menu. Thats asking us to change our identity. Sorry. So, me and my family we had a strategize to meet to obtain the lease and we were caught between what they think is best for us and what we wanted. Its a consistent battle. Constant battle. It has only been more and more difficult trying to retain our identity in japan town. This would help us continue our traditions and help us strive to protect what we do and we want to keep it the way it has been and we find to find out who we are in japan town. We need to keep mums the way of Community Remembers it as. When they grow up we hope they will bring the next generation to dine with us. We hope to continue to be here and share what we love. This is the generation, the next generation to future generations. Im really nervous. Thank you. Any other member of the public. Im please today ask you to support our legacy registry application and the applications of our fellow businesses who make longstanding and impactful contributions to San Francisco. Founded in 1921, cnc is 99 years young and growing from a small, volunteerrun school founded in the settlement tradition serving a handful of immigrant families to today. Cnc is one of the largest and most Dynamic Community schools in the country and the largest on the west coast. To students of all ages and stages providing 2. 2 million in Tuition Assistance each year. Our concert hall is home to more than 100 performances each year enjoyed by over 18,000 people. Our 130 faculty members are leaders in a vast array of musical styles and genras and our programs rely on evolution and innovation. Creating culturally responsive programming for very Young Children and families and immigrant communities and the Transgender Community to name a few. As we enter our second century of service to the city of San Francisco, we appreciate your support of our application allowing cnc to remain vibrant, relevant and socially engage making a difference in our local community and around the city. Thank you. Thank you. Please. Good afternoon, commissioners. My name is selena and i am the executive director of horizons unlimited. I would like to echo the sentiment that im here to support our own agencys application for the legacy business registry and also our other organizations who are also very worth while of this. I would call prestigious designation. On my way up here i was laughing to me self. I dont know if you guys have seen the commercial where they say, im not only the owner but im also a customer and client. And that story is similar for myself. Im very honored and i have a privilege to be the executive director but my journey at horizon started as a youth. I will date myself. It was about 30 years ago when i first came to horizons. Horizons has been a very special in the communitys heart. Our model there is really about culture and family. Our primary population is obviously working with latino youth and other youth of color and were very proud to be one of the only organizations now in the city that offer substitute treatment to those that are impacted by that. I often times walk through the mission and on any given day, you hear the stories of people saying that often times their journey in social services started at horizons as well. We have a lot of people in the community that have benefited from our services. We have a lot of support in the community and were very proud and honored to be where we are today. Always looking to grow and really meet the needs of our community. Having this designation i think would be an honor as i mentioned and would hopefully help safeguard our place and our space, our building itself is more than just four walls. Our youth where it their home. It contains a lot of love. I really feel it has a heartbeat there. It would be very special for us to be awarded this. Thank you for the consideration, i appreciate it. Any other member of the public . Close Public Comment. Commissioner jones. Than
