Is it hyphenated . Just the last time. Thank you. President sanchez can you pronounce your first name. I dont want to mess it up. Katia. Okay, thank you, welcome. Youre going to have a report in a minute or so. Welcome, everybody, to our meeting. I really am happy to be here with everybody. Its good to see so many people out there. We have hundreds of folks. Its going to grow probably. In these times of pandemic, i think its important, we would agree, to offer compassion, kindness and a gentle spirit as we all move through this ordeal together. That were all in it together and we obviously must Work Together to make this during these times. I count on that. Again, welcome, thank you for being here. Section b is opening items. We need approval of the Board Meeting. And two is superintendents report, dr. Matthews. Superintendent matthews good afternoon, everyone. Im glad to see so many you out there and welcome to our new Student Board members. Excited youre on board. So my report for this evening, students in the San Francisco Unified School District black star rising Summer High School readiness and Success Program will engage in a virtual ucsf mathematics engineering achievement bridgebuilding contest to showcase their use of the consents theyve learned over the past five weeks. Students receive the support during a fiveweek Summer Program along with Case Management and quarterly check ins led by our district staff. While schools are temporarily closed, the program was held virtual this year and included a robotics component. The rising 9th graders in this program this year used popsicle sticks and elmer glue to construct their bridges. The students are required to practice scientific writing and focus is required by mesa. Students will need to turn in their lab books that explain the algebra equation they used to construct the slope of the bridge. They also used their understanding of the mathematics to calculate the load on the deck of the bridge. The bridges were dropped off to the mesa ucsf educational director over the weekend and this week each bridge will be tested to determine how many pounds of weight it can hold. So congratulations to our students. We look forward to hearing the results. I would like to remind families good afternoon, ms. Wright mitchell, you may want to mute. I want to remind families to take the fall learning survey on the front page of their website. It is important that your voice is heard during this process. Also, families with eligible children who are eligible for free or reduced priced school meals can receive a pebt card with up to 365 for each eligible child to purchase groceries. Complete the online application by july 15, 2020. So you only have a day to get that done. If youve already applied online, please note the applications will continue to be processed through the end of july, so you will not need to receive your card until the end of july. There is no need to reapply. If you would like to check on the status of your application, please fill out the form at inquiry. Pebt. Finally, this afternoon, id like to show a video that shows how innovative and helpful our San Francisco Unified School District students have been this summer during the pandemic. 600 masks. In San Francisco, the School District allowed students to take materials home over the summer to make face shields. We can use the printers. 400 of them have already been distributed to Nursing Homes and schools. This student is also using his own printers that make gadgets to open doors and press buttons without having to touch them. It makes me feel happy that i can be helping people. Superintendent matthews there you see some of our students and the innovativeness that is happening. Many of our students, we have moved our 3d printers from our schools into their homes and garages and theyre making face shields and masks. As you just saw, the earpiece, behind the earpiece that is distributed throughout the community. That is my comments for this afternoon. President sanchez thank you, dr. Matthews. Well, commissioner collins, i know you had a hard time getting in. The next item is student delegates reports. We have amazing students, chevon and katia who have ive had the opportunity to meet in the past. And chevon helped agendaize our town hall last week and run it. We all on the board look forward to working with you this school year. So moving on. The next item is recognitions and resolutions of commendation. Recognizing all valuable employees are the rave awards tonight. And section c is Public Comment and, mr. Steel, while im reading off the protocol for Public Comment, lets see how many folks are going to raise their hands. Folks out there raise your hand so we can count you. Public comment is an opportunity for the board to hear from the community on the matters within the boards jurisdiction. We ask you refrain from using names. If you have a complaint about an employee, as a reminder, board rules and California Law do not allow us to respond to comments or attempt to answer questions during the Public Comment time. If appropriate, well ask for staff followup with speakers. It looks like 24 at this time, president sanchez. President sanchez okay. Lets give everybody a moment each. Reminder to everybody, this is a comments for items not on the agenda. So please do not speak to items that are already on the agenda for today. Thank you, president sanchez. Are you there . Danielle . One more time, danielle . Hello, patrick . Yes, hello. Go ahead. You have one minute. Thank you, i would like to ask the school board i realize you are considering the very difficult question about how to engage in some sort of or whether to engage in some sort of physical reopening of the schools for this coming year. I would like to ask you to consider to treat the Elementary Schools fundamentally different than the middle and high schools. The reason being that we learned both from epidemiological observation and through biological understanding that Elementary Schoolaged children are substantially lower risk to be vectors of transmission, that is to get or transmit covid19. And for that reason, committing to Distance Learning from middle and high school, but engaging or developing a plan for Elementary Schools to open up would seem to be prudent from a diseasetransmission perspective. In other words, its a lower risk population and its the youngest kids who are least able to learn through Distance Learning whereas the older students i have older students thank you. We have to limit one minute each. That item is later in the agenda. Our fall learning plan. So thats later in the agenda. So, folks, please refrain from speaking to that item right now. Well have time later. Okay. Thank you. Hello, martin . Can you hear me . Yes, you have one minute. Its nice that youre calling on the nice to share your last name. Im calling to say we have a system in place for testing everybody for tb, staff and students to make sites safe. I want the board to use the same protocol opening up schools. 100 of staff and students present a negative test along with cdc recommendations. Does anyone else want to take a shot . I will. Everybody, this is general Public Comment. I know there are probably a lot of folks here that want to speak to the reopening of schools, however, we do the reopening of the schools discussion later on the agenda. Its called the fall learning update. That is where you would speak to issues, anything surrounding the opening of schools. Not during this time for general Public Comment. So if you want to speak to anything related to the testing, reopening of classrooms, you need to wait until later on in the agenda under fall learning update. Not here. This place right now is for items that are not on the agenda. I want to say that again. So if youre speaking to Public Comment now, its items that do not fall on the agenda tonight. Okay, try again. Hello, colleen . Colleen, are you there . One more time. Colleen . Okay. Yes, hi, im here. You can go ahead. I would like to know how much money the San Francisco has spent over the summer on a bunch of consultants and summer salaries and other fees to come up with the fall learning plan. Okay. Thank you. Thats related to the fall learning plan that is later on in the agenda. So, please, if you wanted to speak now, its only to items not on the agenda today. Hello, jennifer . Sorry. I dont know if that falls under that fall agenda. In the beginning of the closure, there was a meeting with some people that we knew that the board knew i think over in hong kong and they were closed down weeks before us and we were learning things that theyre experiencing from Distance Learning. I was wondering if we might be able to touch base with them again since they opened up in may and closed down again . Im not sure. Is that part of fall learning. Pretty close, but thank you. So, well just thank you for your time. Yes, hi. I just had a very quick comment. I wanted to know if there were any updates with regard to the Presidio Early Education School closure, you know, given in light of what is going on with the pandemic, it would be great to know what is happening with that and if negotiations are under way to keep the school open. Thank you. Thank you. President sanchez, that concludes Public Comment on items not on the agenda. President sanchez thank you. Were going to have to troubleshoot that later.
