Chair borden Board Members . If nothing, we can move into our special recognition. Today is a momentous day. This is the very last day for which we will have roberta boomer as our secretary and member of the sfmta staff. It concludes a 33 years with the city and shes a true member of the . Sfmta city family. I cant even imagine the emotions that there must be when youre retiring after 26 years of the same agency. Well be transitioning and youll hear well vote later in our meeting on our new board secreta secretary. Shes not only a Public Servant but is a long term transportation advocate in addition to the role she had at the agency. I think what is tremendous is roberta has onboard and trained 36 Board Members like myself. Nine directors of transportation and six mayors over her years and had a hand in shaping three separate City Departments to become this one agency. I remember when there was d. P. D. And muni and the tactic commission were always interested in hearing about but she was there and has been a guiding Institutional Knowledge for this agency for so many people and for so long. Ill have aman do talk a bit about her illustrious career and hear from past members of the board who want to recognize roberta. Thank you, madame chair. Its 12 directors and about 40 Board Members plus a few nominees. But whose counting. Whos counting. Can you hear me okay . You said i was a little soft before. Secretary its better. Great. Thank you so much madame chair. Im delighted to share details of secretary boomers incredible career but on a personal note its been an honor working with you over the past years. She love this agency with all her being. Shes a proud and hard working Public Servant and not to mention card carrying of the [indiscernible] club. When came to the board i must have called her two or three times every day trying to make sense of the fast and complex agency. She was always available no matter the time of day and always knew the answer and always had a strong opinion in which direction to go forward and quickly became an invaluable resource for me and to the board. I was blown away by the depth of her knowledge. Shes an invaluable asset to this agency and heard in other retirement celebrations people at mta wish she would stay a part of the family and i cant say that clearly enough. Please stay connected. I want to share a little history of her career and the history reads Something Like the history of the sfmta. For all the transit lovers you may learn something by hearing this. At the beginning of her career while work for the chamber of commerce as the Event Coordinator she created a leadership San Francisco program. She met the supervisor and joined his office as a legislative aid and while working there drafted a ballot measure that create the department of parking and traffic. Six years later she was asked by the incoming Transportation Commission president to set up the Commission Office for the newly established Public Transportation department and commission. In 1998, she was asked to coordinate the new muni task force. Appoint then mayor willie brown to address issues with the Public Transit system and develop ways to how to best address them and governance and structure and funding and safety issues. One year later after representing the public Transportation Commission at the table, she cowrote the transition plan for the merger between d. P. T. And muni and then again with taxis to form what is now the sfmta. She oversaw the transition to what is now the sfmta board of directors along with the creation of the citizens advisory council. Through her efforts she was the first City Department to make the materials fully accessible to people with disabilities and to the public by posting them online and accessible format. She has been instrumental in the creation of how we conduct public records requests and records retention policy and created the agencys erouting system to stream line the approval of board agenda item. She has also been a player on the national scene. Shes been very active in the american Public Transit association have been been the mta plan for conferences and is on the executive council and served as the immediate past chair of the transit board support committee. In 2001 an agreement was signed to combine the joint Power Authority and created board policy and procedures for the oversight of what became the trans bay center. In addition, she served as board secretary for other organization. Finally in her time as board secretary shes had a hand in many key Agency Initiatives such as opening the f line, 700 pen and muni metro east facilities getting bike rack installed on muni busses and organized many Agency Events including family holidays for muni, holiday open houses and a host of other things. She also took the time to personally respond to the thousands of people who wrote the board over the years believing people who took the time to write the policy body deserved a response. I wanted to share that history with you because its a remarkable of the agency we are today, roberta had a hand in shaping and i want to thank her for all her leadership over the years and now id like to pass it back to you, chair borden. Chair borden theres not enough that can be said on her impact on the agency and making sure we had our repertoire maintained and stayed on topic at the meeting and Public Comment flowed as it was supposed to happen and closed session. There wasnt a single item secretary boomer didnt think of. I always knew when i came to a meeting id be well prepared and she had already thought of everything in advance i needed to know and briefed me on it. With roberta at the agency i aus felt like she was the goto person anyone could rely on and find out what was going on and to know who to talk to if you needed something done. Roberta, were so thankful for your many yiers of service and so grateful years of service and grateful for how you have shepherd us and your foresight and ability to see the future of where transit and the city needs to move made all the difference in us aligning control of our streets and transit. I dont know that the public before this time had any idea of the depth of your work in making these things happen and the thoughtful penn state that goes in that thoughtfulness that goes in that process. I know San Francisco not just today or tomorrow but for years to come will be better off because you were here at this agency and you were here during this period and time of great transition and growth helping steer the ship. With that, we have a wonderful couple different tributes but one coming your way very soon and very much cable car bill and what it says is roberta boomer in recognition and appreciate of the dedication to the agency, employees and the people of San Francisco and for her tireless efforts to create a Transportation System safe, sustainable and above all equitable by the sfmta board of directors. Roberta, i wish i could hand this to you life. I wish we were at city hall to see all your admirers but i want to let you know this is coming your way and thank you. I will do the bell for you. This im ill pass it over to jeff to make remarks and do a presentation and then well come back and hear from a collection of many past Board Members. Hello, secretary boomer. It is no secret that you could have retired under the previous director but you stuck around to manage the transition process and then you stuck around with the arrival of covid. Not just through the transition but helping us through every thing thats hit us in 2020. Now you stuck around. To help bring on your sus successor to leave the agency in the strongest position to allow the transition to occur. All this is the very definition of public service. You inspire me to be more dedicated, to be stronger and trust in others and help is the other newcomers in the agency now that ive been here almost 11 month. Help us Work Together to make the sfmta what it can be and serve for the public good of San Francisco. I know youve ordered these for many people so wed be remiss if we did not order for you a i hope you can see and a token of our gratitude from the agency. Ill turn it back to the chair. Chair borden we have so many special guests. Art said he had to leave earlier. I want to say how grateful am for the leadership and shes a walking, living archive for the city of San Francisco. She has a statewide and nationwide representation. Weve been so fortunate to have her and have been trained by her and she also provided me vision and director and her own leaderhas been important to the county of San Francisco and i wanted to pass on a message of congratulations from a former Taxi Commission member who is now the governor of california. I wanted to wish you well. Take care. Thank you. Bruce is on. Chair borden would you like to make a few comments . Yes. Can people hear me . Chair borden yes. Thank you for all the years i dont know what we would have done youve made my job with the board much more easy. As a disabled member of the board you made my job so much easier. Chair borden, you made sure all of us are well repaired for each and every prepared for each and every Board Meeting. I never had any problems picking up the phone and calling and you always were there for me. You have everything you need for the future. Thank you. Chair borden leona . Thank you and good afternoon to everyone on. Roberta, i dont know what to say. On my time on the board you are my north store. I cannot move without saying what do i need to do and roberta and you spoiled me when i moved to the next commission i [indiscernible]. Hopefully we can play tennis now and now that youve retired you have time to play tennis with me. Thank you for the services you offered to the city and county of San Francisco. Were grateful as citizens as well as sfmta. Thank you very much. Thank you, madame chair, for yielding. Chair borden who i see from my tenure is tom nolan. Good afternoon. Im happy to be here madame president and members of the board. I worked with roberta and i saw many challenging issues that faced the agency. She always conducted herself in a professional way. And is a mentor and throughout the country really. Im happy to say for me what i received was establishing a long lasting personal relationship. Were dear friends. I value that deeply and always will. I hope you retire with the knowledge you have made a difference in the lives of your fellow San Francisco people. Thank you. Chair borden anyone else . This is malcolm. Chair borden go ahead. Thank you very much. Thank you for indulging my lack of inabilities which is one thing roberta put up with so well. You didnt have to laugh at that, roberta. You learn something, 33 years i didnt realize she started at this job at 14 but thats very impressive. You must have been quite something in those days. Its great it hear all the voices from the past and chair borden and directors, i hope you dont miss me too much. I dont know if theres anything interesting going on these days. As gweneth said theres is historic and i guess theres also an election going on but the true history of the day is roberta is departing. When i left, i love this board very much like a family and no question roberta is the may matriarch of the family. She had a hand of everything we did and everything we did well and every accomplishment from a slow street to an improved subway line to better access to our meetings to making transit equity not just a goal but reality in San Francisco. Roberta had a hand in all that and what many people dont know she also had a hand in preventing a lot of mistakes. Thats something i certainly appreciate. As other Board Members have talked about, roberta was a mentor to us and adviser to us and really helped keep the agency not only functioning well and positively but also from avoiding unforced errors and most of all making sure we considered everyones view. One of the things that impressed me most about roberta is she saw all the angles and knew all the stakeholders and knew what would be important to people and taught me the importance of process which shes a stickler on. I came to realize she wasnt just a stickler because she likes the rules, though she does, but she feels fair process is how everyone gets heard and how we evaluate everyones view. In that regard i feel every innovation this agency made is one she had a director hand in. We talk all the time and a told her how i feel personally but let me summit up this way, as a sum it up this way, as a rider and citizen and friend im grateful. Thank you and enjoy retirement. Thank you. Chair borden another fommer board member sis sis cisineros. I think im maybe your oldest, longest furthest back board member that may be here to honor you today. Secretary from sfmta but not Public Transportation. Always keeping me honest. Ill ask everyones indulgence while i take us back to november 1999 when the voters of San Francisco approved and passed prop f which created the mta as we know it today. Once it was approved, mayor willie brown selected seven incredible human beings to staff the first board of directors and guide and disciplined by roberta boomer as we made our way through the approval process as we got prepared and taught how to be appropriate and how to do our jobs at the first meeting of the mta in march of 2000. Do you remember you prepared thre threering binders and had them delivered in advance of the Board Meeting so we had time to prepare. This is predigital days. This is a very thick, allpaper bound board book roberta sent to us and we carried to every Board Meeting and did as best job we can and i want to personally speak to the many times you helped us avoid embarrassment. One of my embarrassing moments i learned the hard way by not passing my ideas past you before i uttered them and they ended up on the front page of the San Francisco [no audio] i was honored to be your colleague working through the incredible manager Michael Byrnes with your partnership and his to lodge the mta as we know it today and set it on the road to the success weve seen over the now two decades. Before i close, id like to remember the members of the mt
