Shoplifting boom sparks first rise in number of prosecutions for theft in a decade - with 26,000 suspects being brought before the courts in the first six months of last year
There were 25,945 prosecutions for stealing from shops in the year to June 2023 compared to 20,978 the year before - a 24 per cent increase.
