AN EXCITING collection of WWII binoculars owned by WWT Slimbridge founder Sir Peter Scott will go up for auction tomorrow. Son of Scott Scott of the Antarctic, Sir Peter Scott was an artist with a lifelong passion for birdwatching. Serving on HMS Broke, he rose to the rank of commander, and after the war purchased both German and Japanese naval and aircraft optics to carry out bird surveys. Binoculars were an absolute obsession for anyone interested in birding and German military issue were the best to be had at the time. After he was discharged from his navel duties, he set up the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge in November 1946.
