A prominent home builder and his family died Saturday afternoon when their small plane crashed into a home in Lyon Township just a half mile short of its destination, setting the house on fire.

David Compo, 60, his wife, Michele, 55, and their son 18-year-old Dawson were headed to Oakland/Southwest Airport when their plane crashed, according to the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan. 
Neighbors said they helped the residents escape from a home in the 57000 block of Dakota, which suffered extensive damage from the crash. The plane was protruding from the home and covered with a tarp Saturday evening.
