Smart bins which can alert council officers when they need to be emptied could be installed on Barrow's streets in a bid to tackle littering. Barrow Borough Council's executive committee is set to discuss new ways to deal with rubbish at a meeting next week, with one idea involving buying new bins which include built-in capacity sensors as part of the charity Waste and Resources Action Programme's Litter Binfrastructure Grant Scheme. The technology would detect when the contents of a bin reach a pre-set level and automatically alert the council to make sure the bin is emptied. Councillor Derek Brooke, the authority's lead member for community, said he was aware of a rubbish problem.
