Updated: 12:21 PM EDT May 28, 2021 Headed to the beach this weekend or have a summer trip planned? Do you know the rules for the beach you are headed to? Below you will find rules for Hilton Head and Myrle Beach and a list of links for some other beaches in South Carolina. Hilton Head: If you are visiting Hilton Head Island for the Memorial Day weekend, here are some beach tips to know. “Just know when that when you are on our beaches, we want to keep them pristine, we're glad you are here, but make sure you clean when you leave,” said Charlie Clark, a spokesperson from Hilton Head Island Chamber of Commerce. Some Hilton Head Island beach regulations include no glass, no fires and fireworks, no disorderly conduct, and no littering. Violators of these beach regulations are subject to fines up to $500 per offense.“Whatever you bring with you, bring it back, including trash," Clark said.Angie Stone, an assistant town manager for Hilton Head Island, wants the community to be aware of beach parking."We are expecting large crowds this weekend. We have arranged with the University of South Carolina - Beaufort here on the island, we can have folks park there and we will have a trolley run down here (Coligny Beach).According to Stone, the trolley will run between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on demand. Then from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the trolley will run every 20 minutes.Click here for information about Hilton Head Island Trolley. Another thing visitors need to be aware of is the beach's new rules about shovels.“Shovels you bring to the beach need to be plastic or wooded. No metal shovels,” Stone said. Also, if a person is digging a hole in the sand or building a sandcastle, the person needs to restore the sand back to its original condition before leaving the beach. This is a part of Hilton Head Island Beach Ordinance. On Hilton Head Island, from the beginning of May through the end of October is turtle nesting and hatching season. During these months, it is required to have your lights out after 10 p.m.“It is turtle nesting season, so it’s really important that people fill in those holes, so those baby turtles can find their way back to the ocean,” Clark said. For a full list of rules for Hilton Head, click here. Myrtle Beach: The City of Myrtle Beach now has new rules in place for the beach.Earlier this week, city council passed three new rules addressing hole digging, tents for children and surf fishing in the area. Under the new rules, it’s now illegal to dig a hole deeper than 2 feet on the beach. Holes can also not be left unfilled, and metal shovels are no longer allowed for recreational digging. City leaders also updated guidance for children’s tents, increasing the allowed size for shading. The maximum size is now 4 feet wide, 3 feet deep and 3 feet high. The city also says canopies and tents any larger are banned from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Myrtle Beach has an “umbrellas only” policy for the public beach through the summer months.Surf fishing policies were also updated, giving swimmers priority and the right-of-way over those who want to fish from the beach. A fishing license is also required for those wanting to fish from the surf in South Carolina, but not from a pier. All of the changes were recommended by the City of Myrtle Beach Beach Advisory Committee. For a full list of rules for Myrtle Beach, click here.
