The trial of a Springfield man charged with armed violence is scheduled to begin in Sangamon County court today. Kenneth G. Harvey also faces an attempted armed robbery charge and unlawful use of a weapon in an incident in the 1900 block of East Glenn Avenue late on the evening of April 4. Harvey, 44, was allegedly brandishing a sawed-off shotgun when he and a co-defendant, Alexander B. Shanks, who was also allegedly armed, showed up at a garage at the residence. Both were wearing masks to conceal their identities. Harvey then allegedly made demands that the three men empty their pockets. A melee ensued during which Shanks escaped. He was later apprehended by Springfield police. Harvey was detained at the scene.
