"We are super early in the planning process," Brabo said. Unlike a magnet program, which admits applicants based on a lottery system, a choice program is located in a traditional school building. It is designed to serve students who live in the attendance area as well as transfer students. "We are envisioning this to be a whole-school choice program so there are elements of STEAM that would be taught in all content," she said. Brabo said as the district develops and finalizes a plan, it will explore partnerships in the community to support the STEAM approach. As part of the 2019 bond issue, voters approved $41.5 million to build a new Jarrett on the former campus of Portland Elementary, which has been demolished. It is designed to serve up to 725 students in grades 6-8.
