The project, as proposed at that time, was voted down Feb. 2 by the city's Planning and Zoning Board on grounds that it did not fit the use of the property as a neighborhood recreational facility, particularly in regards to traffic, parking and any use of the venue for special events or fundraisers. For more than a decade, the St. Augustine Yacht Club has run a community youth sailing center, providing instructional boating and marine-related education and activity programs, out of the yacht club's headquarters located just north of Lighthouse Park.
