February 23, 2021 State to add climate models to water planning Written by Geoffrey Plant on February 23, 2021 In the year 2070, when scientists project there will be significantly less water available in many regions of the state, what will New Mexicans consider to be the most important uses for that precious resource? And how should a growing population adapt now, in order to use water resources more efficiently in the future? Those are some of the issues on which New Mexico’s first-ever ※50-Year State Water Plan” is intended to serve as a guide, for the next 50 years and beyond. To that end, from March through June, the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources and an advisory group of water resources and climate experts will take a “leap ahead” into the future, and put together a description of how New Mexico’s water resources may change 50 years from now.
