Port Phillip Bay Evening by Arthur Boyd has been generously donated to the Bayside Arts and Heritage Collection.
Arthur Merric Bloomfield Boyd (24 July 1920 – 24 April 1999) was a leading Australian painter of the middle to late 20th century.
Boyd’s work ranges from impressionist renderings of Australian landscape to starkly expressionist figuration, and many canvases feature both.
Port Phillip Bay, Evening is a striking nocturnal work that reduces the landscape of the bay to a minimalist and highly abstract composition. A moody palette of grey, brown and black is subtly punctuated by the distant lights of the Melbourne metropolis.
