The season, which included spearing and hook-and-line fishing, began at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 and ended that same day just shortly after 10 a.m., according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The short window was typical for the annual event: The DNR sets a very low catch quota for lake sturgeon, a threatened species in Michigan, as a way of protecting the ancient fish’s population while also honoring the region’s fishing traditions.
