EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The annual State of the Schools address is usually a celebratory affair, complete with musical performances from students. This year, because of COVID-19 mitigation procedures, the speech to local Rotarians Tuesday afternoon was much more subdued, but Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. Superintendent David Smith still had something to brag about: that, unlike many schools across the country, local students have been in their classrooms with little disruption. In fact, Smith said, EVSC was the largest school district in the Midwest to teach students in-person uninterrupted for the entire year. That announcement earned him a standing ovation from the audience.
