Syracuse, N.Y. — Fanny Villarreal got a mysterious phone call in October from a person who knew a surprising amount about her.
The person claimed to represent a benefactor, who would remain anonymous, evaluating whether to give Villarreal’s organization a huge cash donation. The person wanted to confirm a few details about the Young Women’s Christian Association of Syracuse and Onondaga County, where Villarreal is executive director.
