Zoe Hannah The facilities are a memorial to artist and architect Hundertwasser. The spacious car park behind Te Hononga makes the perfect place for freedom campers to recoup before driving further into the Far North or wrestling the drive back to Auckland. Hundertwasser, the Austrian-born artist famous for his charismatic, unapologetically colourful approach to design and architecture, made New Zealand his home due to his deep desire to be as close to nature as possible. He is famous for inventive mosaics and the colorful, bulbous columns sprinkled all around Kawakawa. The original toilets he built in Kawakawa, which still function today, are his only building in the southern hemisphere and his last architectural work before his death in 2000.
