Letters from Waitangi: Feeling and seeing the majesty of the background

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announces the approval of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for use in New Zealand.
We followed a Crown car along a long gravel road so dry it kicked up impenetrable clouds, caught in morning sun-strike. (When we arrived our rust-coloured SUV was caked in dust that dropped off in clumps when the photographer slammed the rear door.)
Friends, when you have been a reporter for long enough you don’t expect, or want, to feel any emotional response to what you are covering. It is uncool.
When I watched the group of young people from the iwi of Te Taitokerau, of the North, tramping down from the highest spot of the pā, pitted with old trenches from the time of the battle, along a long path to welcome the PM to the site, I experienced a jolt.

More than 700 people gathered on an isolated hilltop south of Kawakawa to remember the victims of a battle 175 years ago as Waitangi commemorations got under way in earnest yesterday.
The dedication of a memorial at Ruapekapeka Pā to 12 British soldiers, whose unmarked grave was rediscovered in 2017, was Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's first official engagement of a four-day stay in Northland.

We don't need to agree about history to recognise its importance

OPINION: I had the recent privilege of attending part of the three-day celebration to commemorate 175 years since the battle of Ruapekapeka. My prior knowledge of the battle and the context in which it was fought is sadly lacking, despite being descended from many of its participants.
Attending a wananga on the battle at Kawiti Marae in Waiōmio, near Kawakawa, home of the battle’s instigator Te Ruki Kawiti, brought home how little I knew of the motivations, context and relevance of the battle in our early colonial period.
The benefit of studying our own history is that we can literally walk the whenua on which it occurred – at Waiōmio we saw Kawiti’s weapons on display; at the battle site we investigated the holes of the “bat’s nest” and saw his cannon damaged by return fire from the British.

Te Hononga: Kawakawa's new Hundertwasser-inspired hub is a freedom camper's dream

Zoe Hannah
The facilities are a memorial to artist and architect Hundertwasser.
The spacious car park behind Te Hononga makes the perfect place for freedom campers to recoup before driving further into the Far North or wrestling the drive back to Auckland.
Hundertwasser, the Austrian-born artist famous for his charismatic, unapologetically colourful approach to design and architecture, made New Zealand his home due to his deep desire to be as close to nature as possible.
He is famous for inventive mosaics and the colorful, bulbous columns sprinkled all around Kawakawa. The original toilets he built in Kawakawa, which still function today, are his only building in the southern hemisphere and his last architectural work before his death in 2000.

As hapū involved in the 1846 battle at Te Ruapekapeka welcome manuhiri to a three-day commemoration, Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Kiri Allan says it’s a chance for all New Zealanders to reflect on the role such conflicts had in creating the nation.
She says the Battle at Te Ruapekapeka Pā, which took place on January 10 and 11 1846, marked the end of the Northern War and was the culmination of the first of a series of conflicts signifying the beginning of the New Zealand Wars.
