The Mausoleum and the Man March 5, 2021, 11:55 PM IST An eclectic mind in a peripatetic body! The soaring dome of the tomb of Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khanan abutting the favoured residential enclave of Nizamuddin East in Delhi now has partial covering of white marble. The neck below the dome, however, is entirely covered in an exquisite pattern of marble and red sandstone. Admiring it from the citrus tree dotted garden around the tomb I was reminded of my first visit there two years ago. At that time, I had serious concerns about the plan to restore the monument to its former glory and had joined issue with the indefatigable conservation architect behind this project—as well as that of Humayun’s Tomb—Ratish Nanda of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. He, typically, invited me to give him a fair hearing and see for myself the state of the building to gauge the need for extensive conservation.
