A continuing series on the 100th anniversary of the current Corn Palace in Mitchell Written By: Marcus Traxler | × The Mitchell Republic commemorates the 100th anniversary of the modern Corn Palace in 2021. (Mindy Wirtzfeld / Forum Design Center) EDITOR’S NOTE: This story is part of a series commemorating the 100th anniversary of the current Corn Palace building, which opened in 1921. The midway for the 1933 Corn Palace Festival included two ferris wheels, a merry-go-round, a tilt-a-whirl and pony rides. But none of those could match the $6,000 “unusual” television — “the scientific discovery that transmits faces as well as voices through the air,” as it was billed — which was shown at the festival for Mitchell showgoers.
