The “Cemetery Day” or “All Souls Day” was observed with much fanfare on March 12 by the
Tamil Community in the
Kalpalli cemetery adjoining Cox
Town. The affluent and the not-so-affluent, the young and the old flocked to the British-era burial ground, which is believed to be the oldest in the Cantonment area. Some of the earliest graves date back to the 19th century.
The tombstones appeared sparkling after getting a fresh coat of paint. Some people performed rituals and others prayed in reverence. The otherwise quiet area was bustling with activity. Some vendors were hawking coconuts, fruits, flowers and assorted pooja items, besides small toys and balloons.
